Common commercial keyways use blanks that are widely available. Hardware stores, locksmiths, and key kiosks may all have compatible blanks.

A restricted key system works differently. Distribution of the key blanks is controlled. Depending on the system, access to a keyway can be limited to authorized dealers, locksmiths, distributors, or end users.

That control is the foundation of restricted key security.

Why does controlling the key blank matter?

A locksmith needs the correct blank before they can duplicate a key.

Owning an expensive key machine doesn't give a locksmith access to every key blank. If another locksmith doesn't have the blank for your restricted keyway, they can't cut a working duplicate.

This creates a physical barrier to unauthorized restricted key duplication.

Can employees have different levels of access?
